10 Indoor Plants for Cleaner Air

Common indoor plants, the beautiful green foliage we keep around us to embellish our living environments, are much, much more. Studies show that houseplants can in fact rid the air of pollutants and toxins and act as allies to help keep the air in our living and work environments clean and pure.

In a 2-year study conducted by NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) in the late 1908s, the results reveal that popular indoor plants may provide a natural way of helping combat “SICK BUILDING SYNDROME.”

After conducting the study, NASA and ALCA came up with a list of the most effective plants for treating indoor air pollution. The recommended plants found below are easily available from your local nursery.

1. Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifritzii)—benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene (TCE)

2. Chrysanthemums or mums (Chrysanthemum morifolium)—benzene, formaldehyde, TCE (the most effective plant against TCE according to NASA)

3. Common Ivy or English Ivy (Hedera helix)—benzene, formaldehyde, TCE, toluene, octane, terpene (the most effective plant against benzene according to NASA)

4. Ficus tree or Weeping fig (Ficus benjamina)—benzene, formaldehyde, TCE, octane, terpene

5. Mass cane (Dracaena massangeana)—benzene, formaldehyde, TCE (the most effective plant against formaldehyde, according to NASA)

6. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum)—benzene, formaldehyde, TCE (Avoid lilies if you have cats – they can be toxic)

7. Purple heart (Tradescantia pallida)—benzene, TCE, toluene, terpene

8. Red Ivy (Hemigraphis alternate)—benzene, TCE, toluene, octane, terpene

9. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum, Chlorophytum elatum)—formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide

10. Wax plant (Hoya carnosa)—benzene, TCE, toluene, octane, terpene

It is suggested that each plant be allowed approximately 10 square yards of floor space, assuming average ceiling heights of 8 to 9 feet. You will need two or three plants to produce good air quality in an average household room.

Remember you can also use Clarity Mist products to to rid a room of bad odors, increase negative ions and reduce allergy related symptoms. (Consult a physician if symptoms persist. Not intended to replace medical attention, people who suffer seizures or if you are pregnant.)

This spring take control of your environment and make it healthier and safer for you and your loved ones.

As always, I am grateful to serve you and look forward to spending many years together as partners living healthy, happy lifestyles.

Be Well.
